Anniversary appeal for Haringey murder

One year on from the murder of Erdogan Guzel in Haringey, detectives will be appealing for information at the scene of his shooting.

Mr Guzel was shot as he sat outside the bakery he owned on Lordship Lane, N22 on the evening of Friday, 10 July 2015. Detectives from the Homicide and Major Crime Command, supported by local borough officers, will be in the area on the evening of Friday, 8 July, distributing appeal leaflets and speaking to people as the work to locate those responsible continues.

The investigation was launched after police were called to reports of several shots fired in Lordship Lane, N22 at approximately 17:45hrs on 10 July 2015.

The suspect arrived at the scene in a dark coloured saloon car and someone in that vehicle discharged several shots from an automatic weapon. After the shooting, the vehicle sped off along Lordship Lane towards Tottenham.

Officers and the London Ambulance Service were called to the scene and found two victims – Mr Guzel and a 51-year-old woman who had also been caught up in the attack. Despite extensive efforts by paramedics, Mr Guzel was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman – who was walking with her daughter doing her shopping – suffered serious injuries but has since recovered.

Detectives are still appealing to trace a group of eight to 10 men who were standing on the pavement nearby to the scene at the time of the shooting. These people may hold vital information about the incident and officers need to eliminate them from their inquiry.

Detective Inspector Mark Richards, of the Homicide and Major Crime Command, said: “It is now a year since Erdogan Guzel, a totally innocent man, was shot and killed as he sat outside his family business.

“I believe there are people within the local community who hold the answers to solving this heinous crime. Those people may have previously felt unable to come forward and speak to police, but a year has now passed and Mr Guzel’s family is still being deprived justice. I would appeal directly to those people to look into their consciences – by withholding information you are knowingly protecting those responsible for committing this terrible crime.

“I appreciate people may feel apprehensive but I would like to reassure them that there are measures we can take, if needed, to protect your identity.”

A total of nine people have been arrested as part of this investigation. A 27-year-old man [I] arrested on suspicion of murder, remains on police bail – he is next due back in late July.

The other eight – five men and three women – have been released no further action.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the incident room on 020 8345 1570 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Detectives previously appealed to trace a man who was riding a mountain bike at the scene at the time of the shooting. He has since been traced and eliminated from the enquiries.
