Apollon Limassol stayed in hot pursuit of league leaders APOEL on Monday after battling to a 1-0 victory at Anorthosis Famagusta at the Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium in Larnaca. Ioan Andone’s side had headed into the game on the backend of a 0-0 draw against APOEL in the league while on Thursday, the Limassol club were eliminated from the group stage of the Europa League following a 3-1 reverse at FC Zurich in Switzerland. But they returned to winning ways in style on Monday night against an Anorthosis side that had been on a good run of form heading into the contest. The only goal of the game came on 57 minutes when Giorgos Merkis spotted Gaston Sangoy unmarked at the far post and he lofted a brilliant cross for Argentinean striker to head home. The same player almost put the game beyond doubt when he squandered a great chance moments later. Andres Paus’ Anorthosis missed a glorious chance to snatch an injury-time equaliser but Andreas Makris fired wired from an acute angle. The victory lifted Apollon to just two points behind unbeaten leaders APOEL heading into the winter break.
