Appeal after 79-year-old woman robbed of savings

Detectives from Camden Borough are appealing for information after an elderly woman was robbed of £1000’s of savings on a street not far from Euston Station.

The incident occurred on Monday, 12 January at 00:40hrs outside Walker House, Phoenix Road, NW1.

The victim, a 79-year-old woman, was walking alone on the forecourt of the block when she was suddenly approached by an unknown man, who forcibly snatched her handbag and ran off.

The robbery left the victim uninjured but in a state of shock and very distressed. The handbag contained approximately £2,500 in cash, and included the victim’s savings.

The victim has since told detectives she now feels vulnerable, is afraid to leave her house and does not feel safe. The pensioner said “I am so scared to go out and very upset that I lost my savings.”

The suspect is described as a clean shaven white man, aged 35 to 50. He was about 5ft 8ins tall medium build with short hair and his clothing was described as “dark and scruffy.”

Detective Constable Arif Sheikh, the investigating officer from Camden Borough CID, said:

“During this robbery the suspect showed no consideration for the victim’s age and preyed on her vulnerability. The victim was attacked as the suspect saw her as an easy target. The has left her in a state of shock and she has lost considerable savings. We need the suspect caught as soon as possible; I would urge anyone with information to contact police.”
