Appeal following fatal collision on A10 Enfield

Detectives investigating a fatal collision on the A10 this week have named the victim.

The 36-year-old motorcyclist who died following a collision on Tuesday, 23 February, has formally been identified as Steven Barnard (30.05.79), from Ware.

Peter Barnard, Steven’s father, said on behalf of his family:

“Steven was born 30 May 1979 at Edgware General Hospital, Middlesex and lived in Colindale, Middlesex until the family moved to Haultwick, Nr Ware in 1980 when he was eight months old.

“Steven attended Little Munden C of E Primary School, Little Munden, Dane End, Nr Ware until he was nine and then moved to Ralph Sadlier Middle School in Puckeridge. At 13 he moved up to Ward Freman School (now know as Freman College) in Buntingford until he was 16 years old.

“It was when he was at Little Munden School that he first got involved in scouting by joining 1st Little Munden Cub Pack, before moving onto the Scout Troup (again 1st Little Munden). He then moved over to 3rd Ware Venture Scout Troup (now know as Explorers Section) and remained involved with them and the group till the present day.

“He was very involved with scouting from a Group, District through to a County Level. Scouting was his life and he was very passionate about it.

“He participated and led many scouting activities including trip to the Peak District. He enjoyed the outdoors and extreme sports like snow boarding, water rafting, mountain climbing and biking, then also off-roading with his Land Rover. Encouraging young people and adults to challenge themselves, their boundaries and face their fears.

“Starting working life with a paper-round whilst still at school he then moved on try his hand at three different industries before finding a career in the public transport industry.

“Initially this was as a bus driver with Arriva in Ware and later with Ponders End, Enfield Garage, before becoming a Bus Controller at the Edmonton Garage. As a controller he was thought of as still being ‘one of the drivers’: he understood and remembered his days of being in the drivers’ seat. Something then tempted him to become a TfL Revenue Inspector before moving away from the buses but remaining under TfL, he became an Underground Train Driver.

“He was always up for a laugh and loved a practical joke…his laugh was something people remember and it was infectious whether you where being laughed at or if he made you laugh. Not only a great lost to his mother, father, sister and her partner and his niece but to his extended family and friends which include his scouting family of which many have grown up with him.”

Detectives from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit continue to investigate the circumstances of the collision between Steven’s motorcycle and a car.

Police were called at approximately 17:20hrs to reports of a collision on Great Cambridge Road (A10), at the junction with Crown Road, Enfield.

Officers and the London Ambulance Service attended the scene. The rider of the motorcycle, later identified as Steven, was pronounced dead at the scene at 17:56hrs.

The driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene. She was not arrested and is assisting detectives with their enquiries.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled to take place on Friday, 26 February.
