Ayia Napa murder suspects arrested in Kyrenia

Two men wanted by Cyprus police in connection with the murder of Briton George Low on Sunday in Ayia Napa, were captured in Kyrenia on Friday by Turkish Cypriot police, according to reports in Turkish Cypriot media.

The two men, Mehmet Akpinar, 22, and Ahmed Salih, 43, will be brought before a court for a remand hearing on Saturday.

Earlier on Friday, claims had surfaced that the two suspects in the murder were not Turkish Cypriots.

According to media reports quoting Hakki Onen, the Turkish Cypriot co-chairman of the bicommuncal technical committee on crime earlier on Friday, one of the suspects was a Turk from Bulgaria while the other was either a Kurd or an Arab.

It was not immediately known who was who.

Police said they had no official information about the matter.

A spokesman said they had issued the arrest warrants against Akpinar and Salih based on a statement given by a third suspect, Koulla Anastasiou, 48. Anastasiou said she lived with Akpinar in her Kamares home in Larnaca. She was the one who told police the two were Turkish Cypriots.

Police said 22-year-old estate agent Low from Dartford, in Kent, and his friend Ben Joseph Robert Parker were walking along Grigori Afxentiou Street at around 3.20am when they were attacked by two men, armed with knives, who then fled in different directions.

Low suffered a fatal blow to his neck, which severed his carotid artery and was declared dead at 3.40am at the private clinic the two were rushed to in Paralimni. Parker was stabbed four times in the back. His condition is not life-threatening.

Turkish Cypriot media have reported that the two suspects believed to have killed George Henry Low in Ayia Napa on Sunday have been arrested in Kyrenia late Friday evening.

Turkish Cypriot police sources said that the two suspects are believed to have violated a military zone before being arrested. The two men will be brought before court Saturday morning. If they are found guilty of illegal entry they will be imprisoned.

She was living since last winter in government housing in Kamares with one of the suspects, 22-year-old Μehmet Αkpinar also known as Μemos.

Memos, and 43-year-old Sali Ahmet, were the prime suspects wanted by police in connection with the murder of George Low, who was fatally stabbed on a busy street near Ayia Napa square on Sunday early morning.

The two suspects were seen running away in different directions and police believe they received help from a third individual, believed to be a Turkish Cypriot Nicosia resident, also wanted by authorities.

They are believed to have crossed into the north, something which could complicate the investigation and test the ability of the two sides to work together to solve the case.
