Barnet residents invited to join in a summer of celebration

Barnet residents can apply to hold street parties during what everyone hopes will be a long, hot summer.

It is expected that many people in Barnet will want to join other communities around the country in holding a street party on 12 June to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday.

And joining in the spirit of celebration, Barnet Council is not charging for processing the applications. However, we do urge residents to discuss their plans with all neighbours who could be affected by a road closure – and to enlist at least three other people to help. People should also allow several weeks for us to process their application.

Jamie Blake, Barnet Council’s Commissioning Director for the Environment, said: “With the arrival of warmer weather this week people are starting to make plans for summer. While a street party is a great way of celebrating big events like the Queen’s 90th birthday, the Olympics or the European Football Championships you don’t need a particular reason to hold one. A street party can build a sense of community and help neighbours meet each other.”

Mr Blake said it is important that residents wishing to organise a street party consider issues such as:

  • how to close off the road safely, including what barriers and signs are needed
  • access for emergency services at all times
  • whether they need to obtain a licence if they are planning to sell food or alcohol.

The application form and related information pages covers these – and other – issues
