Boy chased by police dies in canal

Police have recovered a body from a canal in Hackney following an earlier call to concerns for the welfare of a 17-year-old male.

Police were called at 15:04hrs on Wednesday, 29 July, to an address in Clapton E5, where the family of a 17-year-old male were concerned for his welfare.

Officers attended the location, but the male had left the house by smashing a window prior to police arrival at 15:12hrs.

A search of the surrounding area was subsequently conducted by police officers.

At around 15:50hrs, somebody matching the description of the male was seen by officers on Hackney Marshes.

On seeing police, the male ran off. Officers tried to stop the male in order to assist him, but, prior to police officers reaching him, the male entered the canal near to Lea Bridge Road.

A police officer entered the canal in an attempt to rescue him, but the male went under the water.

A search of the canal and surrounding area was conducted by police officers with the assistance of dog units, the police helicopter, the Marine Policing Unit and London Fire Brigade. London Ambulance Service also attended the scene.

At around 17:20hrs, the body of a male was recovered from the water by officers from the Met’s Marine Policing Unit. We await a post-mortem examination and formal identification.
