British MPs pledge to work for a Cyprus solution

British Conservative Friends of Cyprus were briefed on Thursday on developments concerning the Cyprus problem during a meeting with House of Representatives President Yiannakis Omirou.

In statements after the meeting, Omirou praised the group for its initiatives for a just and democratic solution to the Cyprus issue.

Omirou informed the British MPs about the Greek Cypriot side`s sincere willingness for a solution the soonest, based on UN Security Council resolutions and EU principles and values.

On his part, David Burrows, President of the Conservative Friends of Cyprus, said that together with six other Members of Parliament they represent a “real statement of solidarity and support for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem”.

Their presence, he said, shows “how much we do support a solution” for the benefit of Cypriots and for the benefit of the wider region”. He said this was a very important time as it is an important month of intense negotiations.

Noting the injustice on the island and in the Turkish occupied town of Famagusta, he said this is the only European member state that is divided and occupied and that on their return to Britain, they will have a meeting on Monday at the Parliament to say how much they are concerned that “the solution comes today, not tomorrow but as soon as possible”.

The Republic of Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and still occupies 37% of this EU Mediterranean island`s territory. UN led talks resumed in May with a view in reaching a solution of the Cyprus problem under a federal system.
