A CARER stole £100 from a disabled elderly woman she was supposed to be looking after, a jury was told today (Monday June 10).
The Carer Miss X was one of a number of people employed to look after the victim, who has an inherited neurological disease.
Prosecutor Robin Miric told St Albans Crown Court that the victim, suffers from spinocerebellar ataxia.
He said: “She has problems co-ordinating movements and speaking. She can speak well at times, but her voice can break down and can disappear.
The elderly woman has a number of carers who go to her home in the morning and get her out of bed and take her downstairs to a chair.
“In that room there was a drawer where she kept money for her shopping, bills and to pay her hairdresser.”
He said in August 2012 the victims daughter noticed that money her mother kept in a drawer in a downstairs room at her home in Cheshunt seemed to be short.
“She monitored the money for two to three weeks and noticed the money went when the accused was caring for her mother.
“She kept the matter under observation and then felt she should report matters to the police.”
He said the only people who had access to the elderly womans home were her carers and her family because they knew the combination to open a box where the door key was stored.
The police arrested the accused who denies taking the money between August 1 and 31.
