Cypriot designer says I not typical

  • Hussein Chalayan: I’m not typical

Hussein Chalayan’s aim is to “explore the new”.

Hussein Chalayan isn’t a “typical fashion person”.

The British/Turkish Cypriot fashion designer has previously won British Designer of the Year twice for his contribution to the industry.

With his modern and ground-breaking ideas Hussein’s goal is to create pieces which cater to his target audience’s interests.

“I think I painted my own way of fitting into fashion. I’m not really a typical fashion person, but I am interested in the creative side… I think there is a difference between those who curate a wardrobe for a woman, and designers who try to create new compositions and a different way of looking at the body,” he explained to the March issue of British magazine ELLE. “My aim has always been to explore the new. Maybe the curators have bigger businesses and reputations, and it doesn’t matter to their customer because she just wants to wear nice clothes. But my customer is more a curious person, a visual person.”

Hussein’s Spring/Summer 14 collection is titled Breeze Corridor. The fashion star explained the inspiration behind his new pieces and also shared his latest technique in creating clothes.

Pieces in the range include a white and blue vertical-striped jumpsuit and a grey one-sleeved gown.

“It’s about isolation and participation in summer environments, lots of ideas to do with the beach, the anticipation or participation,” he explained. “I wanted to capture a sort of voyeurism… I really cherish seamlessness. Trying to eliminate seams in a garment is challenging, because you have curves. Seamlessness is a really important theme for me.”
