Cypriot Pensioner shoots neighbour dead after argument

A 74-YEAR-OLD Cypriot man allegedly shot a 45-year-old Iranian asylum seeker in the face, killing him instantly at the apartment block where they both lived in Limassol yesterday evening.

According to police the two had had an argument over the victim’s teenage son.

Soon after the shooting the elderly Cypriot gave himself up to police, after first having locked himself in his apartment.

According to reports, the argument happened after the suspect allegedly reprimanded the Iranian’s 14-year-old son when he saw him stomping all over his air conditioning compressor.

The teen then told his father what had happened.

When his father came home he had an argument with the suspect who was on his balcony at the time.

The Iranian man then made his way to the first floor where the suspect’s apartment was but was met by the pensioner wielding a shotgun. The suspect then allegedly shot the victim in the face and closed himself in his apartment.

Limassol police director Andreas Koushioumis said that there was a witness statement confirming the series of events. Once the police arrived the Cypriot handed over the gun and surrendered.

The victim’s wife, the 14-year-old and their 4-year-old child were in their own apartment at the time.

Koushioumis said police were looking at charges of premeditated murder.

State pathologist Nicolas Charalambous who was called to the scene confirmed that ‘the victim was wounded by a gunshot to the face causing instant death.’
