Cypriot Police intercept cargo filled with fireworks

The crackdown on illegal and dangerous fireworks across Cyprus continued on Monday night after a container arrived by ship crammed with firecrackers, fireworks and illegal cans of aerosol – believed to contain flammable liquid.

According to Limassol CID, the shipment arrived at Limassol Port on Monday night from Italy but was intercepted by police. Officers discovered 10,000 firecrackers, 800 fireworks and 100 aerosols with the police munitions expert recommending that they be taken away and detonated safely after being deemed too dangerous.

Media reports on Tuesday morning stated that the recipient of the merchandise was the same person that had been recently arrested on suspicion of being in illegal possession of 179,000 firecrackers and 16 kilos of fireworks.

Police Spokesperson Andreas Angelides stated that efforts will continue with regards to the nationwide clampdown on illegal fireworks and fire crackers ahead of the Easter weekend.
