Cypriot Police probing hearing dog killing

Police in Oroklini are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal stabbing of a hearing dog on Sunday in Larnaca.

The latest incident involving the killing of a dog has sparked condemnation from the Animal Party of Cyprus (APC) particularly after a man of 40 was arrested over the weekend after allowing 17 of his hunting dogs to starve to death in nearby Aradippou. According to reports, the dog owner – who is said to have a hearing disability – was out walking with hearing dog when somebody attacked the animal with a knife.

Media reports are claiming that the Alsatian attacked a smaller dog resulting in the owner of the small dog to retaliate with a knife.

The hearing dog was rushed to a nearby animal clinic where it succumbed to its injuries. Police are looking into the circumstances surrounding the killing of the animal.

In a written announcement, the APC accused the state of “dragging its feet” when it comes to the protection of animals and their rights while also saying that the situation in Cyprus has reached “nightmare proportions.”

The APC also singled out Larnaca as having the highest number of animal cruelty and killing cases on the island.
