Cypriot sailing athlete Pavlos Kontides enters on Monday the medal race at men`s laser, in a bid to secure bronze at the Rio Olympics, although this will be no easy feat.
According to Cyprus Sports Writers Union correspondent Erodotos Miltiadous, in order to claim the third place, Kontides will have to win the medal race, New Zealand`s Sam Meech will have to end in the 9th or 10th place and three more athletes, standing between the two, will have to finish in the 4th place or lower.
This is the second time in a row Kontides is chasing an Olympic medal, the difference however with the 2012 London Olympics is that, back then, the Cypriot sailor had already secured silver upon entering the medal race. Now, Kontides is at the 7th place and enters with a 15 handicap points difference from the sailor ranking third.
“I will do my best to win the medal race, but it is not only up to me. I will exhaust all possibilities to get a medal” Kontides has stated.
The medal race starts at 20.05 Cyprus time (17.05 GMT).
