A retired academic from Cyprus has pulled together almost eight decades of study to compile the greatest ever collection of English language quotations.
Sofron A Sofron has enjoyed a remarkable career in lecture rooms on both sides of the Atlantic.
The 81-year-old is now President Emeritus of the University of Nicosia on his adopted homeland.
He hopes his Great Quotations in English will be both educational and inspirational.
Sofron said: “The quotations have been thoughtfully selected for their instructive and entertainment value and as vehicles toward an all-round higher education and culture in both the sciences and the humanities.
“It includes quotations from a number of fields, covering history, politics, literature, economics and the physical and life sciences.
“This book will allow the reader to listen to the voices of some of the most intelligent, amusing, well-spoken and even out-spoken people of the past and the present.”
Great Quotations in English has reached the top ten in Amazon’s Education Chart since its release in July.
Charting, in chronological order, thought-provoking quips and quotes ranging from the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and Shakespeare all the way through to Mark Twain, Richard Feynman and Princess Diana, Great Quotations in English is a must for both the student and the teacher.
Sofron, who holds higher degrees from the University of London King’s College, University College, and the London School of Economics, is confident his publication will be a useful addition to any bookcase.
He added: “James Boswell, the great Scots biographer of The Life of Samuel Johnson, is said to have longed for the London coach that would take him to ‘the juiciness of the English mind’.
“This publication will certainly take you to a much wider and longer domain of intellectual and verbal juiciness.
“It abounds in sparkling and memorable thoughts and expressions from Great Britain, the United States, and the Commonwealth as well as from various other English-speaking countries and peoples.
“It is a delightful way to enrich your general knowledge and upgrade your intellectual, verbal and conversational capabilities.
“Jane Austen’s idea of good company was the company of clever, well-informed people, who have a great deal of conversation. This book was written with Jane Austen’s idea in mind.
“It can also serve as an ideal aid for students of various ages and disciplines who enjoy speaking in public or writing impressive and well-informed essays.”
Sofron has spent five years selecting quotes for inclusion in his 272 pages of Great Quotations in English.
