A bill amending National Guard regulations was approved by Cabinet on Wednesday as part of ongoing efforts to reform the army. According to the bill,
conscripts who have a Cypriot mother and foreign national father who were born between August 16, 1960 and June 11, 1999 are entitled to serve a reduced term in the army.
Conscripts born in the same period who have a Cypriot father are required to serve the full military term of 24 months. In addition, the bill provides extra leave days for conscripts who wish to study abroad and those who are serving their term in military camps outside of their home towns. With the exception of Israel,
Cyprus’ compulsory military service is the longest in the world.
