The Turkish military yesterday altered the status quo in the buffer zone by entering no man’s land to put up barbed wire around a well.
Turkish soldiers were seen by Greek Cypriot farmers driving up to the well in the buffer zone, around 500 metres from the village of Avlona, at around 8.30am yesterday. They got out and set up a wire perimeter around the well which supplies water to Avlona village in the occupied areas.
The Cypriot authorities informed the UN of the infringement in the buffer zone. According to the state broadcaster last night, the National Guard was put on alert while extra security measures were reportedly taken in the area.
