Cyprus Cabinet convenes to incorporate parties’ suggestions in foreclosures bill

The Cabinet is expected to convene on Friday afternoon to incorporate a series of proposals submitted by political parties in the foreclosures draft bill, in an effort to secure House approval.

Earlier on Friday, party leaders convened in Nicosia, with President Anastasiades briefing them on government decisions to protect borrowers and primary residences. Representatives of political parties expressed a number of opinions, which were shared by the President and, according to Government Spokesman Nicos Christodoulides, will be incorporated in a number of draft bills.

In his statements, Christodoulides expressed optimism about reaching a successful conclusion that will reinforce the country`s course towards recovery.

Replying to a question, he said that in the afternoon, the Cabinet will finalize draft bills while taking into consideration the concerns aired by the parties earlier in the day. Parties will be later informed, in order to take their own decisions, Christodoulides added.

He made however no mention of specific changes expected to be incorporated in the bills, while noting that the government is in contact with its international lenders to secure approval.

“We are not negotiating alone, we are not alone in this effort”, the Government Spokesman said, adding that the goal is to prevent turmoil in the country.

Christodoulides said finally that the endeavour is a collective one, with the primary goal being the protection of the vulnerable, while meeting the country`s obligations at the same time.

The foreclosures bill needs to be approved by the House of Representatives before the next Eurogroup meeting, in September, for the country to receive the next tranche of international assistance.
