A 60 year-old man was on Friday night expected to be charged and released after allegedly lying to the police about driving the car that hit and injured a nine year-old boy on Monday. The police believe that the man’s teenage son had really been behind the wheel.
According to Limassol Traffic Police Department head Michalis Katsounotos, the man’s insurance company raised suspicions that it had been the 17 year-old son—who does not have a driving licence or insurance—who had been driving the car at the time and not his 60 year-old father.
An 18 year-old man who had been travelling as a passenger in the car at the time of the crash later confirmed that the teenager had been driving, Katsounotos said.
“In is unacceptable that this father, in his effort to relieve his son of responsibility, entered into these inexcusable actions, giving false information to the police and attempting to cheat the insurance company,” Katsounotos said.
The little boy had been standing on the pavement and next to an electricity pole at the time of the accident and was seriously injured in the legs but his condition has since been described as being out of danger.
The father will be returning for further police questioning at a later time as investigations continue
