Omonia and APOEL battled out a goalless draw in a nail biting Nicosia derby on Sunday evening which saw many lost chances, particularly by Omonia.
Despite dropping their first two points this season, APOEL remain in the top spot with 13 points – a position they share with AEK and Anorthosis which defeated Apollon 0-2 in Limassol also on Sunday. Omonia, which was desperate not to lose more ground, has six points. Champions AEL (with eight points) travel to Nicosia on Monday to play Olympiakos.
The GSP game was tightly fought, with Omonia having the most chances in front of goal, but were unable to convert as APOEL goal keeper Urko Pardo was on form. APOEL, which had Stathis Aloneftis and defender Christos Karipidis facing their former team for the first time, also came close in the first half.
In Limassol, Anorthosis scored a valuable away victory over Apollon to join Aek and APOEL at the top. Anorthosis led with Laporde in the 15th minute, netting the second in injury time with Rezek.
On Saturday, AEK were held to a 0-0 away draw by Nea Salamina.
