Cyprus government strongly condemns Limassol mosque vandalism, Spokesperson says

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades has asked for an in depth investigation into an incident of vandalism at the Köprülü mosque, in Limassol, Government Spokesperson Kyriacos Koushos has said, strongly condemning the incident on behalf of the government.

In a written statement, Koushos says that the government of Cyprus “condemns in the strongest possible terms the vandalism which took place at Köprülü mosque, in Limassol.”

“Such actions that are directed against places of worship are unacceptable regardless of where they come from,” he adds.

The Government Spokesperson also notes that from the outset Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades gave explicit instructions for an “in-depth investigation of the case and for the prosecution of the guilty parties.”

Cyprus` religious leaders of the five main faith communities on the island, Greek Orthodox, Muslim, Armenian Orthodox, Maronite and Latin Catholic, forming the Religious Track of the Cyprus Peace Process under the Auspices of the Embassy of Sweden, also condemned earlier on Monday the acts of vandalization done last night to Köprülü Mosque in Limassol.

In a press release, the religious leaders point out that they are very saddened to hear this morning “that petrol bombs were thrown into the sacred premises of the Köprülü Mosque and the outer wall was vandalised with racist graffiti against Islam and immigrants.”
