Cyprus issue discussed at US – Turkey meeting

The Cyprus issue was among the matters discussed during a meeting on Sunday, in Paris, between US and Turkish Ministers of Foreign Affairs John Kerry and Ahmet Davutoğlu respectively.

Davutoğlu referred to the meeting in his remarks to the press. On his part Kerry did not refer to the issue during his statements but he focused on assuring his Turkish counterpart that the US will not have any involvement in Turkey’s internal matters and in the forthcoming elections.

Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs Evangelos Venizelos will also be meeting with John Kerry, on Thursday, in Washington.

Cyprus was divided in 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Previous UN – led efforts to reunify the island under a federal roof have failed.

A renewed effort began in September last year, with the aim to finalize a joint declaration that would pave the way for the resumption of talks. No agreement has been reached so far.
