The 65 swine farms operating in Cyprus are able to cover over 90% of Cyprus’ needs in pork meat, said Agriculture Minister Costas Kadis, citing data from the Department of Agriculture.
The Minister was addressing Saturday the 2nd Scientific Conference on Pig farming, in Limassol, organized by professional associations who are members of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Pig farming comprises a very dynamic sector of Cyprus’ agriculture, the Minister went on, and underlined the need to strengthen and support it as a matter of priority.
He added that the industry faces a very competitive environment, with many challenges. This is why the Ministry is active in meeting these challenges and in improving the competitiveness of the agricultural sector, Kadis went on.
He also said that pork is the first choice in meat and meat products for Cypriot consumers.
Listing the various challenges, the industry is facing, Kadis spoke about increased feed costs, energy costs, environmental restrictions and other problems. These challenges have been identified and we are exerting very effort to meet them, the Minister concluded.
