Cyprus: Police track down stolen cars

A TOTAL of nine cars were impounded by police yesterday during a sweep in Nicosia and Limassol, which aimed at tracking down luxury stolen cars.

After a tip-off from an unknown source, police discovered nine luxury cars – thought to have been stolen abroad – and another 51 cars for which their import duties had not been paid.

The cars were found in several properties, bonded warehouses – where imported cars are kept until their import duty is paid – and car sales offices.

A 37-year-old car salesman was arrested in connection to some of the stolen cars, while he also faces charges of employing a 24-year-old Indian national, who is in the country illegally.

The 24-year-old was also arrested.

The manner in which the cars were brought to the island is still under investigation.

Police clarified that this investigation was not linked to the car theft ring which was uncovered last November, where chassis and license plate numbers from wrecked cars were used on identical stolen cars
