Cyprus Polling stations reopen after break for presidential elections, turnout 30.2%

Polling stations reopened at 1300 local time (11.00 GMT) for today’s presidential elections, with the turnout at 1200 remaining low, at 30.2%.

The turnout at 1200 local time, when polling stations closed for a one-hour break, was lower than the 2013 presidential elections, which was 38.9%. In polling stations abroad, the turnout at 1200 was 18%, compared to 16% in the 2013 elections.

Chief Returning Officer Kypros Kyprianou said voting was running smoothly at all polling stations.

Asked about a report that vouchers were being handed out to voters outside a supermarket in a Paphos District village, Kyrpianou said it was investigated by the Police and turned out not to be a valid complaint.

Regarding complaints that voters had received SMSs, Kyprianou said they had been reported to the Police and were being investigated.

Kyprianou also referred to various arrangements to facilitate the access of disabled persons to polling stations, so that all eligible voters could exercise their right to vote.
