Cyprus received in 2013 €227.1 million in EU funding, according to the latest available figures published in the Financial Report of the European Commission for 2013.
Of this, €104 million (46%) went to regional policy exceeding the EU average of 42%. Farm spending accounted for €77.2 million (34%). Research and development spending in Cyprus was €24.6 million (11%), well above the EU average of 8%.
In 2013 Cyprus contributed €170 million to the EU budget, and also collected €20 million in customs and farm trade duties on the EU`s behalf, of which it retained 25% as an administrative fee.
The EU budget increased by 62% between 2001 and 2011, but two factors, as it is noted, should be borne in mind: First EU absorbed 12 new member states during this period. Second, national budgets rose by more than the EU budget, aside from in Germany, United Kingdom, Italy, Austria, Denmark, Sweden, France, Portugal, Netherlands, Malta, Belgium and Finland
