House of Representatives President and Acting Cyprus President Yiannakis Omirou has said that Cyprus should complain on a UN and EU level of Turkey`s violation of its sovereign rights.
Omirou had been asked to comment on publications in the local press that a Turkish frigate asked on Thursday afternoon from a research vessel of Cypriot ownership, which was conducting research off shore Paphos District within the country`s Exclusive Economic Zone, to leave the area.
If the publication is correct he said, if the vessel was within Cyprus` EEZ and had all the necessary paperwork to conduct research, then such action “constitutes an act of piracy.”
He said that Cyprus should react immediately and make representations on a UN and EU level
