Cyprus: solution a catalyst to exit the economic crisis

A solution to the Cyprus issue can act as a catalyst for Cyprus’ exodus from the economic crisis, President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades said in his address to unveil a monument in honour of freedom fighters during the anti-colonial struggle in the mid 1950s against the British.

“Inspired by the sacrifice and visions of Michalakis Parides, we will fight to revitalize the country. We are making huge efforts for the country to exit the harsh economic situation it is in and at the same time, we are working to achieve a solution to the national problem, end Turkey’s occupation, reunite the country and create conditions that will allow all Cypriots to live in peace,” he said.

“We are determined to turn the crisis to an opportunity”, President Anastasiades said, and assured that he will spare no effort to reach a political settlement.

President Anastasuiades said the “solution can act as a catalyst for the country’s exodus from the economic crisis. The solution to the Cyprus problem will end the continuing Turkification of the occupied areas, halt the influx of settlers, rid the country of the occupation troops and create conditions of unity and creativity for all the people of Cyprus throughout the island”.

Efforts are currently underway with a view to achieving an agreement between the two communities on a joint communiqué that will pave the way for the resumption of UN-led negotiations on the problem of Cyprus, divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of the island’s territory.
