Cyprus tragedy: Coalville family want answers on how best man Daniel Brewster died

The grieving relatives of a 23-year-old man who died in Cyprus are desperate to piece together the circumstances surrounding his death.

Daniel Brewster, who lived in Coalville, was found unconscious in June following a pre-wedding celebration night out with friends on the Mediterranean island.

The welder was there to be best man at his friend’s wedding and had only arrived a few hours before the fatal incident.

Locals found him laying in the street in the early hours of the morning, with a smashed plant trough in pieces around him.

However, despite a police investigation, no explanation has been offered as to how he died.

Daniel was last seen by his friends a few hours earlier but had become separated from the group.

His uncle, David Luther, 49, has hired a Cypriot lawyer and interpreter to work on the family’s behalf to gather information about his nephew’s death.

David, of Ravenstone, said: “He had no reason to be where he was found. It was half-a-mile from where he was last seen by friends and about five miles from the hotel he was staying in.

“He was found with a heavy 5ft concrete flower pot on top of him.

“There were no witnesses to the actual incident that we are aware of, so we have no idea how it happened.”

David flew to the island following the death.

“A number of people have spoken to myself and the family to infer there was more to it than a straightforward accident,” he said.

The family has to raise up to £10,000 to pay for legal costs, translators and court fees.

David said they might never know what happened, but that they owed it to Daniel to try to establish the facts.

“The family has been in regular contact with the Foreign Office, MPs and police in an effort to find some answers but we felt we had come up against a brick wall.

“We want to ensure investigations were carried out thoroughly to ascertain all the facts. I fear the police are happy to just put it down to a Brit abroad who died following an unexplained accident after having a few drinks.

“I appreciate that we might never know what happened or get any closure, but the chances are the longer it goes on the less likely we will ever find out how he died.”

An inquest into Daniel’s death was opened in Cyprus and has been adjourned until the end of next month.

David said any information would have to be found before then, so family and friends have organised events to help fund the legal costs.
