Cyprus – UK converge on scope of implementation post Brexit for British Bases

Cyprus and the UK have had a convergence as regards the scope of implementation of the rights of Cypriot citizens who reside and /or work in the British Bases post Brexit.

As Stelios Makriyiannis, Brexit Coordinator at Cyprus’ Permanent Representation to the EU said during a briefing to Cypriot journalist taking part in a European Parliament – European Commission seminar, in Brussels, on Monday, the first round of consultations has taken place and a convergence was achieved as to the scope of implementation of the final agreement.

Cyprus is seeking to safeguard the rights of Cypriot citizens residing or working on British Bases territory.

Asked how many Cypriot nationals the matter of the British Bases concerns, he said it is around 10,000.

Any arrangement the two sides come to, will be then integrated in the eventual Brexit agreement between the UK and the EU, he explained. The bilateral consultations take place under the umbrella of the official EU – UK negotiations.

Referring to the consequences of Brexit for Cyprus in general, the Cypriot official referred among others to the fact that Cyprus and Britain have often in the past had common approaches at EU level in particular on financial and taxation matters. The precise consequences of Brexit, he said, cannot be estimated yet as the future framework of relations between the UK and the EU has not yet been finalised.
