The decrease of deaths among pedestrians between 2003 and 2013 was much greater in Cyprus than the EU average, reaching 8.3% compared to 5.5% in the EU.
According to the 29th Flash Report of the European Transport Safety Council`s Road Safety PIN programme, despite progress, Cyprus` number of dead pedestrians to the population ratio in 2013 is almost the same with the EU average.
According to an official announcement, presenting a summary of the report`s findings, a total of 138,400 pedestrians and cyclists lost their lives in the EU during the 2001-2013 period.
Deaths of pedestrians represent 21% of the total of traffic-related deaths in the EU, while cyclists 8%.
The rate of decrease in the deaths of pedestrians and cyclists in the last 10 years was lower than the rate of decrease in deaths of passengers.
ETCS also includes in the report a number of suggestions, calling inter alia the EU to encourage member states to create zones with a speed limit of 30 km/h in residential areas and of 50 km/h in other urban roads.
