House President Yiannakis Omirou has denounced statements by the top UN envoy on Cyprus who talked about the “Presidency of the Greek Cypriots”, referring to the Presidency of the EU Council which the Republic of Cyprus will assume in July this year.
“I believe a major issue is raised from the reference to ‘Presidency of the Greek Cypriots’ instead of the Presidency of the Republic of Cyprus by Special Adviser of the UN SG in Cyprus Alexander Downer”, Omirou says in a written statement, adding this is unacceptable behavior that flagrantly violates all the resolutions of the UN Security Council on Cyprus, the UN Charter, international law rules and the principles and values of the EU.
“As President of the House of Representatives that represents and expresses the legislative power of the Republic of Cyprus, I consider it my duty to denounce Downer’s statements and to underline the UN Secretary General’s responsibilities to secure the objectivity, the impartiality, the credibility of the person he appoints as his representatives in the efforts to solve Cyprus issue”, Omirou points out.
