EDON calls on the school pupils and student movement

The Central Council of EDON welcomes today’s mass events to denounce the proclamation of the pseudo-state organized by the school pupils and student movement. The events took place simultaneously in all districts for the first time in the history of the pupils and student movement, characterized by a militant spirit and determination.

However, with regret and disappointment we note the stand of NEDISY (Note: the youth organisation of the Right-wing governing Democratic Rally DISY party, EPP member) through which it made great efforts all through the previous period, but even more so today to split up and divide the events held; whether organizing at the same time other events or calling on students not to participate in the events organised or violating the political framework agreed by the mass school pupils the student movement, PSEM (Pancyprian Coordinating Committee of School Pupils( and POFEN (Pancyprian Federation of Student Unions).

At the same time, during today’s events in Nicosia, NEDISY made a deliberate attempt to create tension by engaging in a nationalist frenzy chanting slogans violating the agreed framework, slogans such as : “Cyprus is Greek”, “The land in Cyprus is Greek”, “Turks, you will die on Greek soil” and “Turks – Mongolian – killers”. So that NEDISY can rally its members and supporters, it is led into a competition with the ELAM (Note: the National Popular Front founded in 2008, a Greek Cypriot ultra-right, nationalist-chauvinist and anti-communist movemnet, fraternal organisation of Golden Dawn in Greece), about who is the most extreme, the tragic results of which society as a whole will reap. If it is with these minds that the Democratic Rally party and President Anastasiades will try to solve the Cyprus problem let them reconsider it.

EDON calls on the school pupils and student movement, together, to attend in mass numbers the meeting in remembrance and honour of the 1973 Polytechnic uprising organised outside the US Embassy in Nicosia and in Limassol on Monday 18th November.
