Eroglu: We agreed with Turkey that the negotiations will have no result after 1 July
Turkish Cypriot daily Gunes newspaper (16.03.12) reports that the Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu has said that they share the same view with Turkey that the negotiations on the Cyrus problem will have no result after 1 July.
In statements yesterday after his meeting with President Christofias within the framework of the Cyprus talks, Eroglu alleged that the Turkish side has been carrying out the negotiations having in mind an agreement from the very beginning. He claimed that it would be meaningless to continue the negotiations taking into consideration that the debates for the presidential elections in the Republic of Cyprus started early and that Cyprus will overtake the EU term presidency on 1 July. “We have the same view with the government of the Republic of Turkey on this issue as well”, he added.
Eroglu said that yesterday they discussed the property issue with President Christofias and exchanged views on the views which the UN submitted to the sides regarding the property issue. “We tried to achieve convergence concentrating on the property”, he said adding that the representatives of the two leaders will meet today to discuss the details and try to produce a common document.
Responding to a question, Eroglu described his recent meetings in Ankara as “satisfactory” adding that as Turkish side they will try to push the process for an agreement by 1 July and declare to the public whether reaching an agreement is possible.
Eroglu alleged that “it would be daydreaming” to expect President Christofias to show flexibility at the negotiating table, because he will most probably run for candidate in the forthcoming presidential elections.
