European Commission President optimistic of Cyprus solution in the next six months

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has expressed optimism and the wish that Cyprus will be reunified in the first six months of 2016

“I am very optimistic that in the first six months of this year we will have a final agreement for the island`s reunification, I hope, because I like Cypriots very much,” he said replying to questions during a press conference on Friday.

“There are many hard working, clever and very educated people on both sides of the island,” he added.

He expressed the wish that “we will have the opportunity to see Cyprus` reunification within the first six months of 2016.”

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and subsequently occupied its northern third. UN backed talks have resumed since last May aiming to reunify the island under a federal roof.
