European Parliament to debate Brexit progress

The European Parliament will discuss on Wednesday about the progress regarding the exit of the UK from the EU, ahead of the European Council that will take place later this week, with Commission Vice-President Frans Timmermans and chief EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier.

The final decision on whether the talks have made “sufficient progress” or not will be taken by the EU 27 heads of state or government, on Friday.

The Brexit debate will focus on whether the EU Commission and the UK have made “sufficient progress” in the Brexit talks – on citizens’ rights, the UK Northern Irish border with Ireland and the “divorce bill” – to enable them to move on to talks on the shape the future relations between the EU and the UK should take.

The EU Parliament will have the final say on the outcome of negotiations when it votes to approve or reject the withdrawal deal.

The agreement must be finalised by the end of March 2019.
