Fire raging on three fronts in Cyprus

The massive fire which broke out on Sunday in the Solea region, in Nicosia district, is still raging on three fronts, the Chief of the Forestry Department Takis Tsintidis told CNA on Monday afternoon.

Tsintidis said that the fire is raging now at the villages of Spilia, Kannavia and Ayia Eirini.

He said that on many fronts the fire is under control and its intensity has been reduced because the winds are not as strong as they were earlier on in the day and the temperature has dropped.

Tsintidis told CNA that two helicopters arrived in the afternoon from Greece and are operating with all other aircraft, local and from abroad. Also firefighters, officers of the Forestry Department, the Civil Defence, the Army, the Police Force, the local councils and volunteers are working to extinguish the fire.

The fire fighting aircraft will be operating till sunset.

Tsintidis also said that three officers of the Forestry Department were injured as their vehicle was overturned and they were rushed to hospital.

As regards the residents of the villages near the fire, he said that they have been instructed to evacuate their homes, if necessary, but added that so far nobody is in danger.
