Flamingos return to Akrotiri wetland

Hundreds of flamingos have returned to Akrotiri wetland, in Limassol district, following last week’s rainfall, the Akrotiri Environmental Education Center said.

According to the announcement, it is estimated that nearly 300 flamingos are now in the area, with numbers increasing daily.

Every year, between October and February, flamingos flock to the wetland to feed on brine shrimp and plankton, and many of them stay all year round, if conditions remain favorable.

The Center’s director, Dr. Thomas Hadjikyriakou, said he was excited to see the flamingos return and urged birdwatchers to take advantage of the center’s facilities to have the best experience.

He pointed out that the Center has three telescopes that look out over the wetland and can accommodate up to 100 visitors at a time.

Hadjikyriakou warned, however, that visitors should not attempt to approach the flamingos or walk into the lake, as it could disrupt their habitat.
