Owners of ‘gas guzzling’ cars will pay more to park in Haringey under a tougher new permit scheme designed to make the borough cleaner and greener.
A more comprehensive emission-based pricing structure is being introduced for parking permits, with charges reflecting how much pollution a car causes.
The proposed new scheme is an extension of the council’s existing emission-based scheme and now uses the full banding system set out by the DVLA.
It is being introduced as part of a raft of proposals to make our permit system fairer including:
- The roll-out of six month resident permits, aimed at residents with short term tenancies
- A simplified range of visitors permits with no maximum purchase limits
Also under the proposals, the age to qualify for our concessionary scheme will increase from 60 to 65 years.
Haringey was one of the first councils to set an ambitious target to reduce CO2 emissions in the borough by 40% by 2020. Haringey 40:20 was also set up to bring together residents, businesses, social enterprises, charities and community groups to help create a better future for everyone living and working in the borough.
The council’s transport strategy, which is due to be published in the spring, will also set out our aim to become a cleaner and greener borough over the next 10 years.
Haringey Council Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Peter Mitchell, said:
“Air quality is a huge issue in London, affecting people’s health and quality of life. We are committed to doing all we can to reduce pollution in our borough and that includes being even tougher on heavily polluting vehicles.
These changes to permit prices, alongside other measures designed to encourage more people to walk and cycle, are a big step towards ensuring a cleaner, greener Haringey.”
The proposed new prices will be introduced from late March.
