Greece is pursuing a viable Cyprus settlement

Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos said Greece is pursuing the soonest, a fair and viable solution to the Cyprus problem.

Speaking during an official dinner on Thursday night, hosted to honour French counterpart Emmanuel Macron who is on a two-day visit to Athens, Pavlopoulos also said it is incomprehensible that the Republic of Cyprus, as a full member of the EU, to have restricted sovereignty, caused by occupation troops and anachronistic guarantees by third parties”.

He said that “such development is contrary to every meaning of international and European law and would create a dangerous and disastrous precedent for the sovereignty of every EU member state”.

He also supported Turkey’s European course, noting that Greece wants a democratic Turkey that will respect European and international law.

The latest round of UN-facilitated talks ended in Crans Montana, in early July, ended inconclusively. Talks aimed at finding a negotiated settlement that would reunite Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.
