AEK has returned to the top of the Super League table thanks to the triumph of Panathinaikos at the Derby of Eternal Rivals with Olympiakos on Sunday, while PAOK also dropped points.
Contrary to recent form, a goal by Argentine Vicente Taborda gifted Panathinaikos a 1-0 win at Piraeus and stirred things up at the top of the standings.
The Greens shocked the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium with their 7th minute goal through a quick combination by Taborda and Andreas Tetteh.
Olympiakos underperformed in the first half and tried to make amends in the second, but luck was not on its side.
The derby will also be remembered for the two glaring chances missed within one minute by Olympiakos’ Gelson Martins and Panathinaikos’ Pavlos Pantelidis, as both could not find the target from just inches out.
AEK had to wait till the 55th minute to get its first goal on Sunday, but eventually won 4-0 at bottom team Panserraikos, goals coming from Barnabas Varga (twice), Razvan Marin and Marko Grujic. The latter three goals came after the 88th minute, when the Serres team was left with 10 men.
Aris and PAOK shared a very entertaining goalless draw at the Thessaloniki derby on Sunday, with PAOK having the best part of the chances and both goalkeepers standing out with their saves.
In other weekend games, OFI beat fourth-placed Levadiakos 3-2 in Crete, Panetolikos smashed Larissa 4-1 away, Asteras Tripolis downed Volos 2-0 and Atromitos saw off host Kifissia 1-0.
