Greece’s and Cyprus’ Olympic Committees signed a Memorandum of Understanding

Greece’s and Cyprus’ Olympic Committees signed on Wednesday a Memorandum of Understanding in the field of sport, in a ceremony which took place in Nicosia.

The MoU was signed by the Presidents of the two Olympic Committees Dinos Michaelides and Spyros Capralos. The ceremony was attended among others by Greece’s Ambassador in Nicosia Ilias Fotopoulos and Cyprus Sports Organisation President Kleanthis Georgiades.

By signing the MoU the two Committees wish to enhance their cooperation and to promote, among other, an exchange of sports visits between the two countries, the participation of athletes in sports meetings and international sports meetings, the exchange of information and views in sports issues and the invitation to take part in conferences, lectures, seminars or academic meetings.

In statements after the MoU was signed Michaelides said that the memorandum constitutes a confirmation of the close ties with Greece.

“It is a great honour for the Cyprus Olympic Committee and for any country in the world to sign a cooperation protocol with the Greek Olympic Committee,” he said, adding that Cyprus can greatly benefit from Greece and this is already evident from the existing cooperation between the Cyprus Sports Organisation and the Sports General Secretariat of Greece.

On his part Capralos spoke of a “very important day” because it is “the first cooperation protocol we have signed with another Olympic Committee.”
Taking part in the Olympic Games is very important and when we see Cypriot athletes taking part in the Games we feel the same joy as when Greek athletes are competing, he noted.
