Greek and Turkish Cypriot trade unions reiterate will to strive for peace in Cyprus

Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot trade unions reiterated on Tuesday their will to strive for a solution of Cyprus in an event organised outside the Home of Cooperation in the Green Line separating Nicosia, the island`s capital.

On the occasion of the September 1, World Peace Day, members of Greek Cypriot PEO and Turkish Cypriot DEV-IS, KTAMS, KTOS, KTOEOS, BES and KOOP-SEN gathered on both side of the green line dividing the capital since the 1974 Turkish invasion and chanting slogans such as “Cyprus Federal and United” “Cyprus belongs to its people” and “Peace cannot be obstructed in Cyprus” converged outside the premises of the Home of Cooperation.

All speakers underlined their will and the importance of a settlement to the Cyprus problem.

“We are here today to affirm once more our will and resolve for a bi-zonal bi-communal federation in the framework of reunited state, with one sovereignty, one nationality and one international personality,” Pambis Kyritsis, General Secretary of the Greek Cypriot PEO said addressing the event, noting that Cyprus should be free from foreign military presence, with no guardians and constitute a bridge of peace and security for the region,

He called on the leaders to rise to the occasion and work in the negotiating table and produce results.

Along the same lines, T/c Koop-SEN General Secretary Mehmet Ali Goruz said “we, the Cypriots should do our utmost to reach a bi-zonal, bi-communal structure on the basis of political equality of the two communities with one sovereignty and nationality as stipulated in the UN paremetres.”

“We the non governmental organisations should raise our voice to all those who are trying to obstruct peace in Cyprus and with solidarity to strengthen our actions. We should do this so our children will not become refugees, should not search for the future abroad and so they could live in Cyprus as Cypriots.”

On behalf of the bi-communal initiative, Takis Hadjidemetriou said the message of the event is clear. We can live in peace, together, G/c and T/c we can fight for happier future for Cyprus.

The event concluded with songs and music from bicommunal groups.
