Olympiakos and PAOK canceled each other out at Sunday’s derby in Piraeus, so the three-way tie at the top until Saturday has ended and AEK is alone now at the Super League summit.
The big game at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium finished 0-0, with both Olympiakos and PAOK missing chances to score in a fairly entertaining encounter. The Reds show a serious scoring problem, having only made four goals in their last seven matches.
AEK defeated struggling Larissa 1-0 on Saturday, thanks to an early Harold Moukoudi goal. It now is two points clear at the top with two games left to play till the end of the regular season.
Panathinaikos beat Levadiakos 4-1 away on Sunday and clinched its place in the playoffs and in Europe next season, thanks also to last Wednesday’s home win against OFI with the same score. At Livadia, Panathinaikos – scorer of 13 goals in its last four league games – had Javi Hernandez, Tasos Bakasetas, Sotiris Kontouris and Giorgos Kyriakopoulos on target. Fabricio Pedrozo pulled one back for Levadiakos, that can still hope for a spot in Europe through the 5-8 playoffs (unless OFI wins the Cup).
In other weekend games, bottom team Panserraikos beat second-bottom Asteras 1-0 at Tripoli, to give joy to all five of its traveling fans, 10-man Aris drew 0-0 at home with Atromitos, and Volos shared a 1-1 draw with OFI.
AEK has 56 points, Olympiakos and PAOK have 54, Panathinaikos climbed to 45, Levadiakos stayed on 39 and OFI shares the sixth spot with Aris on 29 points.
While the relegation affair remains wide open ahead of the playouts, we already know the teams to go up from Super League 2: Iraklis is returning after nine years to the top flight, alongside Kalamata that is back on the top level of Greek soccer after 26 long years.
