PAOK and Olympiakos won again to stay at the top of the Super League, within one point from each other, as leader PAOK trounced host Panserraikos and Olympiakos kept up the chase with its home win over Aris. AEK and Panathinaikos show they will struggle to follow them this season, while Levadiakos and Volos keep stealing the show.
Having led from the third minute at Serres through an own goal by Aristotelis Karasalidis, PAOK easily beat Panserraikos 5-0 on Sunday, thanks also to a brace by Magomed Ozdoev and goals from Giorgos Giakoumakis and Alessandro Bianco.
Olympiakos had Daniel Podence and Mehdi Taremi to thank for its 2-1 win against Aris in Piraeus on Saturday. Even after Gustavo Mancha left the Reds with 10 after conceding a penalty and Loren Moron reduced Aris’ arrears 20 minutes from the end, the Piraeus team held on to keep all three points.
AEK left it late, but at least won 1-0 against visiting Panetolikos on Sunday. Orbelin Pineda’s goal will calm AEK fans’ nerves who see their team appear far from convincing.
Volos scored its fifth win downing Rafa Benitez’s Panathinaikos 1-0 at home, courtesy of a Lazaros Lambrou goal. Levadiakos matched Volos with a road win at Larissa and a 2-0 result. Volos and Levadiakos share the fourth spot of the table, that leads to the playoffs.
Promoted Kifissia is also having an impressive start, as after the first third of the regular season it stands at the seventh spot, having just beaten host Atromitos 2-1 at Peristeri.
On Monday bottom team Asteras hosts OFI Crete in Tripoli. OFI has a new coach in Christos Kontis, formerly of Panathinaikos.
PAOK leads with 23 points from nine games, Olympiakos has 22, AEK is on 19, while Levadiakos and Volos reached 15.
