Haringey Borough’s run of consecutive wins came to a halt on Saturday with a defeat away to Soham amid controversy. In a strong wind and the threat of more heavy rain in the offing, the game started with a minute’s silence for a Soham supporter.
Haringey Borough kicked off with the wind in the first half but couldn’t use it to their advantage. Clearances and long balls were too long and going through to Soham’s keeper or out for a goal kicks.
The first real chance fell to Leroy Griffiths, Haringey’s number nine, whose shot only tested the trees behind the goal instead of troubling the goalie.
Soham’s first chance came ten minutes later but the striker’s header went wide. While at the other end Haringey’s Anthony McDonald broke through on the left but his shot hit the side netting.
The half ended with a bad tackle by Soham’s number six on Haringey’s number four Ashley Fashanu which lead to both players being caution after Fashanu reacted to the event.
Soham now with the wind at their backs, didn’t test Ashley Harris in the Haringey goal until he produced a smart save down to his right on fifty-four minutes.
Five minutes later the breakthrough. Dan Aristidou received the ball on the right and from the half way line produced an inch perfect cross ball to McDonald who received it in his stride, went passed the Soham full back and drove a low shot across the goalkeeper into the bottom corner. 1-0
The game settled with the conditions just about winning, when on seventy-two minutes Soham equalised. A shot by Soham’s number 11 went through a crowed penalty area and passed Harris in Haringey’s goal to settle in the back of the net. 1-1
On eighty-four minutes Aristidou found himself in the Soham’s box ready to shoot when he was bundled over, no penalty but the Haringey players didn’t complain.
Coming up to full time Soham completed the turn around when George Darling, an earlier substitute drilled home from the edge of the box. 1-2
The game still had one more talking point. Deep into added on time Haringey’s number 3, Dean Fenton received the ball on the edge of the Soham penalty area and was brought down by the ‘keeper. Whether it was inside the box or not, the referee decided it was fair, much to the dismay of the Haringey players and management, some venting their anger more than others.
Haringey’s next game is at home on Tuesday 15th December when they play in a rearranged match versus Thamesmead Town , and then on Saturday they are also at home to Brightlingsea Regent, the last game before Christmas, hopefully a present of at least 3 points is in prospect.
