Heatwave conditions prevail on Thursday all over Cyprus and according to officials, they will continue to do so until Monday.
The temperature reached 40 degrees Celsius on Thursday, while the Department of Meteorology has issued a “yellow alert” for a second consecutive day.
Electricity demand remains today in very high levels but is not expected to top last Tuesday`s demand, the highest recorded in years.
Moreover, there was a rise in people with respiratory problems visiting the Emergency Department at Nicosia General Hospital, however no heat stroke incidents were recorded.
Speaking to CNA, Meteorological Officer Matthaios Papadakis has said that the “yellow alert” continues, with temperatures in Cyprus expected to reach on Thursday 40 degrees Celsius. On Friday, a small decrease is expected, at 39 degrees.
Giorgos Ashikalis, a Director at the Cyprus Transmission System Operator, said on his part that electricity demand reached last Tuesday 1,033 MW and expected Thursday`s demand not to exceed 1,033 MW.
The production capacity of Cyprus is around 1,400 MW and there is a reserve of 30% Ashikalis noted.
Andreas Eliades, Assistant Director at the Nicosia General Hospital Emergency Department, confirmed that there was an increase in the number of people with respiratory problems seeking help, due to the heat.
He added, however, that there was no incident involving a heat stroke and urged vulnerable people to take care, not expose themselves to the sun and drink a lot of water.
