Herts to help prevent cold related deaths

Public authorities in Hertfordshire have been given a half-a-million pound grant to help prevent cold-related deaths this winter.

The cash, from the Department of Heath, is to be spent helping vulnerable people and those on low incomes via schemes to insulate homes, supplying extra heaters and bolstering services for the homeless.

The scheme will be co-ordinated by county’s councils and NHS trust as well as charities such as Age UK Hertfordshire, Hertfordshire Community Meals and Citizen Advice Bureaux.

Dr Raymond Jankowski, deputy director of public health from NHS Hertfordshire, said: “Colder weather increases blood pressure and those already with heart and vascular disease are most at risk from developing a stroke or heart problem in cold conditions.

“Winter weather can also affect those with breathing problems like asthma as cold air makes it more difficult to breathe clearly.

“Keeping warm can help you keep well.”

Anyone worried about keeping warm and well can contact the HertsHelp helpline for information and advice on 0300 123 4044.
