Illegal Turkish Cypriot UDI is a blatant violation of international law, Greek Foreign Affairs Ministry stresses

The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement issued here today to condemn the 34th anniversary of the illegal declaration of independence in Cyprus` northern Turkish occupied areas, stresses that the UDI is a blatant violation of international law.

“Today’s regrettable anniversary of the unilateral declaration of independence, announced by the Turkish Cypriots in Cyprus` occupied areas, is a stark reminder to the international community that an independent state, which is also a UN and EU member, remains under foreign military occupation”, the statement points out.

The Foreign Ministry also says that this unilateral and illegal action is a blatant violation of the rules and principles of international law, which coupled with the continuing occupation and the illegal settlement is obstructing efforts for a mutually acceptable solution of the Cyprus problem.

“It is also perpetuating the violation of the human rights of all Cypriot, as well as the isolation of the Turkish Cypriot community,” the statement adds.

The FM recalls that with resolutions 541/1983 and 550/1984, the UN Security Council has condemned this illegal, secessionist and invalid action. The Security Council calls on all states not to recognize or facilitate in any way the self-declared Turkish Cypriot regime and describes this action as legally invalid.

Greece will never accept the Turkish invasion and occupation of Cyprus as fait accompli, and will continue in a responsible manner to work for the restoration of international law and for a viable solution of the Cyprus problem, in the context of UN resolutions, concludes the statement.
