Image released in connection with distraction burglary – Potters Bar

Police are releasing a facial reconstruction (Evo Fit) in connection with a distraction burglary which took place in Potters Bar recently.

The incident occurred on Sunday, September 5 between 4.30pm and 4.50pm in Park Avenue.

Two men knocked on the victim’s door and told him that they were from the ‘water board’ and were working in the street. The victim was told to fill some containers of water in the kitchen. Whilst he was distracted, it is believed one of the men searched the property, removing cash and jewellery.

The first man is described as being approximately 50 years old, around 5ft 9ins tall with a medium build, a dark complexion and dark hair. He was wearing dark clothing.

The second man is described as white, aged in his forties, with brown hair. He was said to be clean shaven and had a longer face than the first man.

Detective Constable Jason Tinsey from the specialist unit Operation Manhunt said: “The victim has assisted police with creating this e-fit of the suspect, which we are releasing to help the investigation. I’d urge anyone who may recognise this face or the description of the man given, to contact police immediately.

“I’d also remind people that if they are faced with a similar call, not to let these people in. This is a common tactic which criminals use to gain access to a person’s home and if you receive a similar call at your door you should refuse entry and contact police immediately.”

If you can identify this man or have information about the incident, please contact Operation Manhunt via the Herts Police non-emergency number 101 quoting crime reference number J3/15/932. Alternatively contact the independent crime-fighting charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or through their Anonymous Online Form at www.crimestoppers-uk.org. No personal details are taken, information cannot be traced or recorded and you will never need to go to court.

Police are reminding people to not open the door to unexpected callers.

Not sure? Don’t open the door! – If you are not expecting anyone and you don’t recognise them, don’t let them into your home. Try to communicate with the caller without opening the door and ask them to return at a time when you have someone you trust with you.

If you are expecting a caller – If a person you are expecting comes at the time you have arranged, ask to see their identification before you let them in.

Never keep large amounts of cash at home. Put your money in an account where it is safe.
